Free Australian business directories can still be worth a listing when they're used properly: real business details, consistent contact information, relevant categories and no spammy anchor text. They are not magic links, and they won't fix weak content or a poor website on their own.

This page lists 21 directory candidates. Treat them as candidates, not recommendations. The names and addresses come from an earlier version of this article. On 31 October 2026 we checked each original address once (method and results below). Most still respond, but five are no longer linked because they now redirect to a different domain or couldn't be reached. A response only shows that an address loads. Whether a site is free to list on and still publishes useful profiles is something to confirm yourself, and the worksheet below makes that quick.

Why 21 when the page address says 20? The earlier version promised 20 directories and showed 21 — the last one, PureLocal, was added as an extra. We've kept all 21 and numbered them so nothing quietly disappears.

Before You Submit Your Business

Have these ready before you start:

  • Exact business name, address, phone number and website URL — written the same way every time.
  • One plain-English business description. Don't paste the same keyword-stuffed paragraph everywhere.
  • Primary and secondary categories that match what you actually sell.
  • A logo, a few real business photos and opening hours, if the directory takes them.
  • A spreadsheet row for each directory (columns are listed further down).

One more step that saves cleanup later: before creating a listing, search the directory for your business name and phone number. An old or automatically created profile may already exist. Claim and correct it rather than making a second one.

The Directory Triage Worksheet

Run each candidate through five checks. It takes a few minutes per directory and stops you spending an afternoon on sites that won't help anyone.

CriterionQuestion to answerHow to check
1. Business relevanceIs there a category that matches what you sell, where you sell it?Browse the categories. Search your service plus your suburb or city.
2. Public profile and findabilityDo listings appear as public pages that people can actually find?Open a few existing listings. Search Google for one of those businesses' names and see whether its profile on this directory shows up.
3. Accurate detailsCan you enter your exact name, address, phone and website, matching your other profiles?Start the sign-up and look at the fields. Watch for forced formats, missing fields or old data pre-filled.
4. Ability to maintainCan you log in later and edit or remove the listing yourself?Look for a login, claim or edit option. Note which email address owns the account.
5. Customer usefulnessWould a real customer use this page to find or check you?Look for recent listings, reviews and working contact buttons. Ask yourself whether you'd trust it as a customer.

Cost and terms gate (not scored): Is listing actually free when you sign up, and what are you agreeing to? Read the pricing and terms and note any upsells or auto-renewals. If it costs money, that's a separate decision, not a free listing.

Scoring: Yes = 2, Partly = 1, No = 0. If you haven't checked a criterion yet, leave it blank and write it down as a to-do.

Decision rules:

  • Any criterion not checked yet, or the cost and terms gate not checked → no decision. An unknown is a check you still have to do. It isn't a pass, and the score so far isn't a fail either.
  • "No" on accurate details or ability to maintain → skip. A profile you can't correct turns into a liability the next time your phone number or address changes.
  • 8–10, with all five checked and the cost and terms gate passed → list it.
  • 6–7, with all five checked and the cost and terms gate passed → optional. List it if you have time.
  • 5 or less → skip.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Invented business, invented directory. This is not a real provider or a real assessment. It only shows how the scoring works.

A mobile dog groomer in Ipswich is looking at "Directory X".

CriterionFindingScore
Business relevanceHas a pet grooming category with Ipswich as a location2
Public profile and findabilityNot checked yet— (to-do)
Accurate detailsTakes the exact name and mobile number, but only offers a street address field, and the groomer works from a van1
Ability to maintainSign-up creates a password-protected account with an edit option2
Customer usefulnessNot checked yet— (to-do)

Score so far: 2 + 1 + 2 = 5, with two checks outstanding. Decision: none yet. If both outstanding checks come back Yes, the total is 5 + 2 + 2 = 9, and it's worth listing once the cost and terms gate is also checked. If both come back No, it stays at 5 and gets skipped. Reading the unfinished 5 as a fail — or skipping the checks and listing anyway — would both be the wrong call.

The address field needs its own check. If Directory X would publish the street address and that's the groomer's home, the groomer shouldn't publish private details just to raise the score. Check whether the directory allows a service-area or hidden-address format. If it doesn't, skip this candidate.

The 21 Original Entries: Our 31 October 2026 Link Check

How we checked: on 31 October 2026 we sent one automated public request to each of the 21 addresses from the earlier version of this article. Redirects were recorded but not followed. We used no logins and didn't retry blocked requests.

What we found: 12 gave a normal response, 4 redirected to a different domain, 3 blocked the automated check, 1 redirected within the same site, and 1 couldn't be reached.

What it doesn't tell you: a normal response only means the address loaded for that one request. We didn't review any site's features, pricing, listing terms or profile quality. None of the 21 is confirmed free or recommended, so run the worksheet on each. A blocked automated check doesn't mean the site is dead; a person may still be able to open it. The five entries that redirected to a different domain or couldn't be reached are kept for the record but are no longer linked.

General directories are fine for keeping your basic details consistent. After that, an industry directory your customers actually use is often worth more than another general listing. Run it through the same worksheet.

Track What You List

Keep one row per directory with these columns:

DirectoryWorksheet scoreDate submittedProfile URLApproved?Login emailDetails last checkedReferral visits or enquiries

Keep the profile URL and login email for every listing. Without them you can't fix a listing when your details change. Check your analytics for referral visits from each directory every few months. If a listing shows no tracked referrals, it may still help people confirm your business is real. The job that matters is keeping its details accurate; decide whether to keep it based on whether you can still do that.

What Directory Listings Can and Can't Do

The useful part of a directory listing is not just the link. A good listing confirms your business name, address, phone number, category and website in one more public place, which helps search engines and real customers connect the dots. A poor listing on a dead or spammy site does the opposite: it adds noise and gives you one more profile to clean up later.

Don't expect directory listings on their own to move rankings. Treat them as basic housekeeping and a possible source of referrals, not a link-building strategy.

When a Free Listing Isn't Worth It

  • The site looks abandoned, or its listings are mostly spam.
  • It asks for a link back or a link exchange in return.
  • You can't edit or remove the listing later.
  • It pushes you towards keyword-stuffed business names or anchor text.
  • It's free to submit but every useful feature is behind a paid upgrade you don't need.

A short list of clean, relevant, maintained profiles is better than hundreds of weak ones.

FAQ

How do I judge whether a directory is worth it? Use the five checks above. In short: real Australian businesses, public profile pages, a category that fits, details you can control, and a page a customer would actually use.

Are niche directories better than general ones? Often, yes. A relevant industry directory puts your listing next to businesses and categories that match what you do. Use general directories for consistent basic details, then look for niche ones your customers trust.

How long do directory listings take to help? There's no reliable timetable, and some listings may never move rankings by themselves. Track approval, the profile URL, referral visits and whether the listing appears when someone searches your business name.
